Begin your White County getaway near Monticello at the twin reservoirs of Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman. Lake Shafer, the larger and more commercial of the two, is designated an all sports lake. This means bring your own boat or rent one here, then plan for full days of water-skiing, fishing, and swimming. The shore of Lake Shafer is also where you’ll find Indiana Beach, a classic amusement park, celebrating their 100th in 2026.
Lake Freeman is smaller, quieter, and more residential, but it’s also the home of the Madam Carroll, Indiana’s largest boat and a nonstop party. With a bar and live music, it can carry 500 people. Also available are brunch and dinner cruises, family cruises and holiday celebrations.
For a bit of nostalgia, check out the Lake Shore Drive-In, which has been in operation since 1948. They have a full-service concession stand, just like you remember.
Don’t miss the Whistle Stop Café and Monon Connection Museum, where a treasure-trove of train memorabilia awaits railroad enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. A collection of 6,500 artifacts are displayed for your enjoyment.
For a sampling of White County’s history, stop by the Wolcott House, home of Anson Wolcott, founder of the town of the same name, population 950. This New York businessman saw real estate possibilities in Indiana in the 1850s and also became involved in politics. The home he built for his family is today a museum outfitted with period pieces and many of the family’s original furnishings.
Shopping in Monticello is always an adventure. Necessities is where you’ll find women’s and children’s clothing, and another option is Crafts Unlimited Gifts, with its elegant selection of items like jewelry, pillows, scarves, and pocket hugs — small tokens to be carried as a remembrance of the giver’s affection.
At the other end of the spectrum is Lola’s Place, a consignment shop where the inventory changes every time you visit. Usually available are furniture, figurines, linens, dolls, frames, antique tins, and crockery.

There isn’t a shortage of great food/drink spots either. Roots Eatery and Pub is just down the road from the family farm that provides its fresh meat and vegetables.
If you’re craving sweets, a visit to the 10.10 Bakery will make your day. Owner Ayanna Thompson crafts cakes, cake pops, cookies, and more that are a feast for the eyes as well a delight for the senses.
The Whyte Horse Winery is the place to go for a happy hour unlike any other. Their house-made libations are worth the visit, but the owners decorate for every occasion, and they know how to make tasting their wines pure fun.
For lunch or at dinnertime you can’t do better than Oak and Barrel, where chef/owner Chance Ledyard is also committed to local ingredients for his tasty entrees.
