A whopping 8.1 million households currently own RVs in the United States, and some 20 million to 22 million people live in manufactured homes. With 80% of the RVs and many of the homes or their components made in Elkhart, the “world capital of recreational vehicles and manufactured housing,” it makes perfect sense that there would be a museum here to celebrate this legacy.

The folks at the RV/MH Hall of Fame say their mission is “to recognize, preserve and honor the history, pioneers and individuals who have been instrumental in making the recreational vehicle and manufactured housing industries what they are today.” With that in mind, they’ve got plenty to show you when you make the trip.
Begin your visit with a walk through the Founders Hall of Fame, which chronicles the evolution of the industry from early tent campers to luxury motorhomes. Start with the 1913 Earl Travel Trailer, considered to be the first travel vehicle that wasn’t a tent. Next explore models created between the 1920s and the ’80s, with multiple examples of the coaches and technology from each era available to see.
In one part of the museum check out photos and memorabilia having to do with the people who have designed and built models throughout the ages. In another check out three fully furnished and decorated mobile homes. As you exit the building, pass by a series of interactive displays that lead you to the final frontier — a motorhome colonization of Mars.

The museum features the sights, sounds and smells of a professionally curated atmosphere. There is plenty of seating throughout for anyone who needs to take a break, and children ages 3 to 5 can enjoy a play area.
Already have your own RV? Drive it here and plan to spend a night or two. Along with reasonable prices and discounts for seniors and children, that makes this the ideal experience for everyone in the family.
