Originally built by William A. Bowles in 1845 and expanded in 1901 by the Indianapolis-based architectural firm of D.A. Bohlen & Son, history and art have been built into every inch of the guest rooms and public areas.
The resort’s rich history dates back to the early 19th century, when Native Americans and French trappers were drawn to a nearby salt lick frequented by wildlife traveling along the Buffalo Trace. Healing mineral waters from underground springs were later named Pluto Water after the Roman god of the underworld, while renovations to the original Victorian structure introduced elegant Mediterranean Revival and Italian Renaissance architectural influences.
The centerpiece of its sister property, West Baden Springs Hotel, is its iconic 200-foot dome, which spans the atrium and was incorporated into the redesigned structure after the original building was destroyed by fire in 1901. While many said such a dome was impossible, architect Harrison Albright and bridge engineer Oliver Westcott proved them wrong. They created what affectionately became known as “the Eighth Wonder of the World,” a breathtaking architectural masterpiece and one of the most visually stunning spaces in the region. Between 1902 and 1913 it held the title of the largest free-spanning dome in the world, and yet today it attracts visitors from all over the world.
The spa experiences at both hotels offer a deeper immersion into the region’s distinctive character. The 27,000-square-foot, 28-room Spa at French Lick offers hotel guests and others luxurious pampering amid a sophisticated décor inspired by some of the nation’s most celebrated spa destinations. Guests can choose from an extensive menu of treatments, ranging from the Moroccan Rhassoul Clay Wrap and Sacred Stone Massage Experience to the historic Signature Pluto Bath and the 19th Hole Renewal, designed especially for golfers returning from rounds on courses designed by Pete Dye and Donald Ross.
The Spa at West Baden Springs Hotel, inspired by Europe’s grand historic spas, features a two-level natatorium with a full-service spa offering 12 treatment rooms alongside a health club and indoor lap pool. Its extensive treatment menu includes the West Baden Flawless Facial, Bamboo Massage, Marine Vitality Soak, Scrumptious Body Scrub, and Paraffin Pedicure.
Art continues to be part of the experience here at the French Lick West Baden Museum, where the spotlight is on The World’s Largest Circus Diorama, a one-of-a-kind attraction that showcases remarkable craftsmanship and storytelling. Created by Canadian artist Peter Gorman, it was 60 years in the making.
Other exhibits celebrate the city’s storied past and its most notable native sons, including basketball legend Larry Bird. Alongside its permanent collection, rotating exhibitions offer fresh perspectives on French Lick, while the Town Gallery, refreshed twice each year, showcases the work of local artists and collectors.

Another exhibit is dedicated to the historic Monon Railroad, which once carried affluent travelers to the resort town during its heyday. The museum’s gift shop, the French Lick 5 & 10 Vintage Dime Store, adds another nostalgic touch to the experience.
Contemporary artists and makers continue to make French Lick an intriguing destination. Bear Hollow Wood Carvers, a gallery that represents more than 60 artists, presents animals, people and objects created from blocks of wood. Visit in September for the annual Block Bash when the streets come alive with the buzz of chainsaws and the aroma of freshly cut wood. Guests can bid on finished works at the auction, watch live carving demonstrations, browse the artist’s marketplace, and enjoy fare from local food trucks.
The Hinshaw family has been crafting beautiful jewelry since 1961 at Hinshaw Rock N Gems. Their nationally acclaimed lapidary artists create outstanding designs that range from one-of-a-kind jewelry to decorative items and even guitar picks.
A visit to Envision Designs in Paoli is an absolute must. The name derives from the mission of the First Chance Center: “Encourage, inspire and believe that Inclusion is possible for everyone.” Shop for handbags, baskets, decorative items, and made-to-order pieces fashioned by individuals with disabilities from materials discarded by other industries. Proceeds from purchases made here directly support the center’s ongoing programs and initiatives.
A vibrant performing arts scene is yet another way to immerse yourself in the local cultural scene. The French Lick Resort Exhibition Hall showcases live music in genres that range from country to jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues. Live Music on the Veranda invites guests to unwind in the resort’s signature rocking chairs while enjoying performances, with additional offerings including Jazz Under the Dome, Live Music in the Lobby, Live Music in the Atrium, and Live Music in the Valley on select days throughout the week.
Nearby Castle Knoll Amphitheater at Castle Knoll Farms features well-known artists such as Travis Tritt, the Roots and Boots Tour with Deana Carter, and Yachtly Crew.
